The North Omaha Trail

Explore the North Omaha Trail App!

This route is be within walking distance of several community resources and amenities including:

Health & Mobility

Many people realize exercise is important for maintaining good health in all stages of life; however, many do not regularly exercise... Providing convenient access to places for physical activity, such as trails, increases the level of physical activity in a community. In addition to helping control weight, physical activity helps prevent heart disease, helps control cholesterol levels and diabetes, lowers the risk of certain cancers and helps reduce anxiety and depression. Moreover, trails connect people to where they want to be, and economic benefits come from connecting people to places that they want to be.

Community

Neighborhoods where children can safely walk or bike to a park, school, or to a neighbor’s home are generally also good places to live. Integrating unique features such as trails into cities helps build a sense of place and community pride by providing informal opportunities to meet and interact with neighbors. Trails and greenways can reduce crime and illegal activity through regular use and high visibility of users. Community members can get involved here.

Art, History & Culture

All of the previously mentioned benefits are magnified when communities use trails and greenways to highlight and provide access to historic and cultural resources. North Omaha is filled with creative talent and creative organizations like NOISE, Culxr House and the Union for Contemporary Art, to name a few.

The North Omaha Trail will serve as a canvas for local artists and creatives by creating multiple opportunities to integrate creative projects throughout the route.

The North Omaha Trail will provide a critical transportation, economic, recreational, and public health link that will tie in to the Paxton Boulevard Trail and connect several North Omaha neighborhood anchors including the North Omaha transit station at 30th & Ames, the Kennedy Square redevelopment, the 24th & Lake Historic District, and eventually North Downtown. Construction on phase 1 of the trail is complete!

"No idea is original. There is nothing new under the sun. It’s never what you do but how it is done"

How have other cities developed urban trails?

The North Omaha Trail project follows the examples of other successful urban trails like the Atlanta’s Beltline Trail, New Orleans’ Lafitte Greenway, Detroit’s Dequindre Cut, and Minneapolis’ Midtown Greenway. Check out how these other cities have utilized their urban trails.

And if you want to check out something really cool, take a look at the Get Up N’ Ride movement that was started in New Orleans.

This has been a community vision for years…

The proposed route builds upon years of local, regional and national planning efforts. Locally, this route contains portions of bicycle connections proposed in the City of Omaha Master Plan , the North Omaha Development Project, Village Revitalization Plan, and the recent Forever North Strategy . The route also supplements and supports the proposed bicycle network from the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency’s (MAPA) Regional Bicycle Pedestrian Plan, and has the potential to serve as a component of the nationally designated US Bicycle Route System (USBRS).
